Resource calculations
Just some general observations about how to optimize production. I'm very concerned with efficiency, so I try to stick to these general guidelines.
This applies not only to mines but all production; to get a general idea of your raiding income just look at what resources you tend to bring in during 1 day and divide by 24.
Optimized for Xnair production (w/Zeks):
Your lower threshold is crystal. For the correct ratio of your other two based on Crystal production:
Needed Deuterium production = ((current Crystal production)*850)/625
Needed Metal production = ((current Crystal production)*1065)/625
Resource production needed for constant Zek output
(note: since the wiki doesn't have the buildtime reduction for Zeks per level of the biocreator, I just assumed it was the same as the shipyards)
("lvl" = level of the Biocreator; "time" = factor of base time (12.5 minutes))

(Basically same formula as above; you can build a Xnair every 62.5 minutes at constant Zek output at lvl 1 bio. Since there is no "queue", exactly, the level of the shipyard doesn't matter resource-wise.)

Repayment of Ship Cost (basic formula)
Formula assumes full raids and neglects fuel costs.
Number of raids needed = (initial cost)/cargo hold
A few examples:
Xnair: 9 raids
Mylon: 10 raids
Corsair: 24 raids
Figher: 11 raids
As you can see, Xen have the best raiders (as it should be), and Titans have almost no raiding ability whatsoever. For those who don't know, neither the Scout nor the Delphi have any carry capacity. Their one raider, the Corsair, is tons worse than the other two races. The Fighter is a surprisingly good raider, just barely being beaten by Mylons and Xnair--perhaps in need of slight balancing?
Repayment of Ship Cost Formula (advanced)
(Here we take into account average raid time, which allows us to both account for fuel cost and allow for a timeline for repayment. Raids are still assumed to be all full and raiding is assumed to be constant, so the formula will under-estimate.)
(Also, I *think* I have fuel cost down right: if a vessel takes up 5 deut/field and travels one field, then you are out 5 deut. If that's not so, someone correct me please.)
T = (int[(((((d*c)*e)*(a/b))+a)/b)] + int[(((((d*c)*e)*(a/b))+a)/b) - (a/b)])*e
T = Time in hours
a = initial cost
b = cargo hold
c = speed (in fields/hr)
d = fuel consumption (in res/hr)
e = average raid time in hours
In plain English, you find the fuel cost/hr (d*c) and multiply that by average raid time (c), which gives you total fuel cost per raid. Then you multiply that by the number of raids found using the simple formula (a/b); that gives total fuel cost incurred repaying the ship's initial cost. You then add that cost to the initial cost (a) and divide by the cargo capacity (b), like above. That gives you the number of raids adjusted for fuel used (the first half of the addition). Obviously, you'll round up to the nearest integer because you can't very well choose half a raid.
Then if the number of raids is greater than the old number (and due to rounding, that will probably be the case except for Titans), then you add in the additional number of raids, which you get by subtracting the new value (the first half of the addition) from the old value (a/b). That will give you the number of additional raids you need simply to recoup fuel loss; this will be very small except for very long raids. That finally gives you the total number of raids, which you can multiply by the average raid time (e) to get time until vessels repaid.
Whew.
So, for Xnair:
a = 2540
b = 285
c = 13
d = 3
3 = 1.5 (for me so far)
T = (((((d*c)*e)*(a/b))+a)/b) + (((((d*c)*e)*(a/b))+a)/b) - (a/b) = (11 + (11-9)) = 13 raids * 1.5 hours/raid = 19.5 hours, give or take, of constant raiding at full capacity to repay a Xnair.
Which means: it takes 9 raids to pay back the cost of building a Xnair. During the course of those 9 raids, you will use up about about 58.5 Deut a raid, or 526 total, enough Deuterium to require 2 more raids to repay it. Those two raids will cost another 120 or so, which takes another raid, meaning you'll need 12-13 raids total to recoup losses (it varies due to rounding).
*dies*
*necroes*
Other examples:
Mylons: 18
Corsairs: 24
Fighters: 18
I only did the main raiders of the races; if anyone wants another ship done, just ask and I'll plug it into the formula. As you can see, the Mylon and Fighter are both slammed on fuel consumption. The corsair, of course, doesn't consume any fuel, but it still sucks, considering.

It would be easier if the forums didn't limit whitespace.
But still, it's mostly for math nerds and highly competitive people.
I've also got a formula which will tell you how long it takes for any given unit to pay back its cost in raids. When I get back from class I'll plug it in to Excel and give the figures for the base units of each race.
Anyone know how to make invisible text?

wow good job that is extremely useful and very well thought out...terranty what he basically is doing is saying what your mines would need produce to achieve the "nirvana" stage if you will... so that your resources grow perfectly to be able to produce X among of something constantly. very very good forsaken. and yes there is a secret on to how you can post "blank" text... but thats something i am in no liberty to discuss sorry good luck tho :P
gotta love secret text :P
EDIT: well apparently you cant use it

Woot!
That formula, by the way, is as follows:
Assuming an average of 2 hour round trip raids,
# of raids = initial cost/cargo hold
Thus a Xnair, which costs 2540 resources, has a repayment rate of
2540/285 = 9 raids
Fairly simple. Factoring speed and fuel consumption in is more difficult though. I'm still working out the kinks in that one.

Nice, thanks however..
Where do you get 1100 resources per xnair?
5 zeks are 725 metal, 625 crystal, and 540 deut. Then the actual xnair is 740

So helpful edit
2,540/285 = 8.91 raids
EDIT: Fixed, and I'll pass on the edit for above: 450 deuterium
Nice, I did the same thing in beta 1 so I'd know how much resources I'd need over 24 hrs to keep my military ship yard running constantly. I actually can't wait till I'm ready to start doing the same thing in this game.

Oops. Calculator clicking fail.
Edit: to edit your edit, (145 + 125 + 90)*5 + (340 + 400) = 2540
Added advanced formula. GOOD GOD THAT WAS HARD. Okay. I'll plug that into Excel then.
