Go for Ice while your building lot research is still in its early stages. Earth planets have an extra building lot, but you'll need an extra power plant to equal the energy output of a good Ice planet, so I wouldn't recommend that.

My colonies are all about 5-6 fields away from each other, which is close enough for decent trader travel time, but far away enough so they don't get in each other's way when harvesting comets.

Most importantly of all: find a planet with high energy output. My first colony sucked and you really feel that when your fleet starts growing.

Yes, Ice planets for sure in the early stages, then water (not eartlikes). Colonize about 10 squares away or more. Trading times aren't so important cause the planet will have his own gathering force when things become expensive.

And build destoyers against titans

he most likely has delphis and they pwn BSs

So I colonized ice planet with 149 hydro and 167 wind, best I could find. It's also pretty far away. Next I'm researching destroyers as suggested and in a few days I can start building the fleet. My Titan friend did his first colonization as well, so now I have two targets to hit

battleships for shield breaking, destroyers for titan killing

And like gape said. Ice and only Ice at the start. Later on your going to want water planets, but until you've got fusion and decent building lots, its just not a great idea. Even later on you may want some earth planets, but you wont have very many of those most of your planets will be water and ice worlds.

Hopefully, you have built small transports and you are constantly raiding the unoccupied planets in your area.
